What is the difference between уфолог and уролог in Russian?

Уфолог and уролог differ by just one syllable — -фо- vs -ро- — yet one studies extraterrestrials and the other treats urinary complaints. Both end in -лог (from Greek logos, “study of”), but the first half of уфолог comes from the acronym УФО (Russian for UFO), while уро- goes back to Greek οὖρον (ouron), “urine.” One shared suffix, two radically different jobs.

The confusion is spectacularly real: an Argentine TV show discussing newly declassified US documents on aliens invited a уфолог for expert comment — but the guest who showed up was a уролог. On air, the doctor clarified: «Я не уфолог, я уролог. Звучит похоже, но это разное» (“I’m not a ufologist, I’m a urologist. They sound alike, but they’re different things”). The studio fell into awkward silence, then the hosts pivoted to men’s health questions — which the doctor answered with perfect composure. The -лог suffix is a productive Greek borrowing in Russian: биолог, психолог, кардиолог — spotting it instantly tells you someone is an expert in a field.
