What does “беситься” mean in Russian?
Бесить means “to drive someone mad,” and the annoying thing is the subject: меня бесит шум, “the noise drives me mad.” Add -ся and the person becomes the subject: беситься. For adults that means “to be furious” (он бесится, “he’s fuming”). For kids it means to run wild: shrieking, chasing, jumping on the sofa. Меня бесит is one of the most common ways to vent in Russian.
The root is бес, “demon,” so the image behind all of these is being possessed. In this sketch, a fed-up teacher tells her pupils to save the chaos for home: Дома так беситесь, из кухни в зал бегайте, “go wild like that at home, run from the kitchen to the living room.” With friends you’ll hear не беси меня! (“stop winding me up!”) and бесит, когда… (“I hate it when…”).
