What does “dědek” mean in Czech?

Dědek is the Czech word for “grandfather” or “old man,” and Czechs reach for it constantly to tease men of any age. Plural dědci turns a group of grown men into a cluster of grandpas in a single word. Czech humor loves this kind of small downgrade: replacing the neutral muži (“men”) with dědci takes the air out of any pretension.

In this TV interview clip, a presenter teases a group of men about their reaction when actress Vica Kerekes walks on stage: “Tak se z mužů stávají dědci?” (“Do men turn into grandpas?”). The line lands because dědci is funnier than muži would be. Czech sitcoms, sports broadcasts, and family banter all run on this same downgrade move.
