What does “le bac” mean in French?
In France, “le bac” is the big exam students take at the end of high school, around age 18. The full name is “le baccalauréat,” but almost no one uses that word in daily life. Here a strict mother says her daughter’s boyfriend is “une distraction pour le bac” — a distraction from the exam. Many families see the bac as the door to university, so there is a lot of pressure around it.
In the clip the mother says: “Pour elle, c’est une distraction pour le bac.” (For her, he is a distraction from the bac.) The daughter, tired of hearing it, says it back herself: “Oui, je sais, c’est une distraction pour le bac.” (Yes, I know, he’s a distraction from the bac.) “Le bac” is the short, everyday form of “le baccalauréat,” the national school-leaving exam taken at the end of “le lycée” (high school). The full word sounds formal; “le bac” is what people actually say. You will hear it in many forms: “passer le bac” (to sit the exam), “avoir le bac” (to pass it), “le bac de philo” (the philosophy paper). There are three tracks: “bac général,” “bac technologique,” and “bac professionnel.” Note: the same short word “le bac” can also mean a ferry boat or a plastic tub. Context tells you which one. In a school setting, it always means the exam.
