Why do Latin Americans call money “plata”?

Plata literally means “silver,” but ask for money almost anywhere in Latin America and you’ll hear it used that way instead of dinero. The word choice alone marks her as a fluent negotiator — dinero would sound stiffer and more formal for a quick, casual ask like this one.

The habit dates back centuries: colonial-era coins were minted in silver, so plata became shorthand for cash the way “silver” and “dough” both once did in English slang. It barely surfaces in Spain, where dinero dominates, but across Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Southern Cone it’s the default everyday word — plata for cash in hand, dinero for the more abstract concept of money.
