You can estrenar zapatos, estrenar un coche, estrenar una casa, or estrenar una película — the verb captures that charged, brand-new-thing feeling regardless of what the object is. The reflex form estrenarse means to make your own debut, as a performer or a building opening for the first time.

The word traces back to Latin strena, meaning a good omen or New Year’s gift — the kind of thing you’d unwrap and use for the very first time. That sense of a ceremonial first moment is still alive in the word today. In the clip, a game-show contestant walks out in tiny tiger-print boots and admits “es la primera vez que me los pongo” — it’s the first time she’s wearing them, and she can barely walk.
