What does “botanas” mean in Mexican Spanish?
Botanas are Mexico’s salty snacks — chips, peanuts, chicharrones, anything you nibble, often alongside a drink. The word comes from the verb botanear, “to snack,” so you can also say estábamos botaneando (“we were snacking”). It carries a social, shared feel close to Spain’s tapas, but in Mexican homes and cantinas. Where a Spaniard offers aperitivos and a Colombian pasabocas, a Mexican host puts out botanas.
In the clip a child spills botanas across a new car seat — instantly readable as crunchy snack food, not a meal. Singular una botana can mean a single snack or the whole snack spread. The regional map is worth knowing: botanas (Mexico), pasabocas (Colombia), picadera (Dominican Republic), pasapalos (Venezuela), all pointing at the same finger-food-with-drinks idea.
