What does 'wel' mean as a Dutch particle?
Wel is Dutch’s affirmative particle, the opposite of niet (not). Where English uses do for emphasis (I do like it), Dutch slips wel into the sentence: Ik vind het wel goed (I do find it good, actually), Het is wel waar (it is true, actually). Wel lets a speaker hedge, push back, or affirm without sounding harsh.
This Karrewiet clip stages wel in a kids' debate about school uniforms. « Ik vind aan 1 kant wel goed » (I do think on one side it’s good), « Ja, ik vind dat wel waar » (yeah, that’s true actually), « Ik vind dat eigenlijk niet erg » (I don’t actually mind it). The wel/niet see-saw is the whole engine of Dutch opinion-debate.
