What is a Dutch “grabbelton”?

A grabbelton is a Dutch party staple: a box (or barrel) filled with small wrapped prizes that you reach into without looking. Grabbel comes from the verb grabbelen (“to grab around blind”), and the suffix -ton means “barrel.” The grabbelton turns up at kinderfeestjes, Sinterklaas events, primary-school afscheid ceremonies, and Dutch corporate Friday-afternoon drinks. The thrill is the lottery shape: every kid gets a prize, but no one knows which prize until it’s pulled.

In this clip, a Dutch teacher receives an end-of-year grabbelton from her class. The kids have wrapped socks printed with each child’s face, and the teacher reaches in blind: “Een grabbelton bedoel ik.”
