What does “sich verfangen” mean in German?
Sich verfangen means to get caught or ensnared in something — a fish in a net, a thread in a machine, or gum in carpet fibers. It is built from fangen (“to catch”) plus the prefix ver-, which adds a sense of going wrong or getting stuck. The result is more vivid than fangen alone: not just caught, but caught in a way that makes things worse the more you struggle.
In the clip, the speaker tries pulling the warm gum out by hand — “verfängt er sich nur in den Fasern” (“it just catches in the fibers”) — and the situation gets messier with every tug. That moment locks the word in memory better than any flashcard. The figurative use follows the same logic: Deine Argumente verfangen sich nicht means your arguments aren’t taking hold, they’re getting nowhere — stuck before they land. The ver- prefix does heavy lifting across German: compare verirren (to get lost), verwickeln (to get entangled), verstricken (to get caught up in). Recognising it as a “things going wrong or irreversibly” marker is one of the more useful A2-level pattern unlocks.
