What does “Gegner” mean in German?

In German, der Gegner means opponent or adversary in a structured contest — a sports rival, a courtroom counterpart, a chess partner across the board. It comes from gegen (“against”) and carries no hatred. The word for a genuine, hostile enemy is Feind. That gap matters: you can call someone your Gegner and your Bruder in the same breath, which is exactly what a footballer does here seconds after the final whistle.

In the clip, a Christian footballer explains why his team joined players from the opposing side — their Gegner — for a post-match prayer circle: “Im Spiel sind wir Gegner gegeneinander, und dann nach dem Spiel sind wir alle Christen und wir sind so Brüder.” On the pitch they were opponents; off it, brothers. The contrast only lands because Gegner is neutral enough to coexist with Brüder — a Feind could not. The plural is die Gegner; the female form is die Gegnerin.
