What does “bowser” mean in Australian English?
If an Australian says “the fuel will hit our bowsers today,” they mean petrol is arriving at service stations. A bowser is the pump you use to fill your car. The word comes from Sylvanus Bowser, an American who built an early fuel pump in the 1880s. His company sold pumps to Australia and New Zealand, and his name stuck. Today it is a completely normal, everyday word — not slang.
In the clip, a reporter says the government has released emergency fuel reserves and “that fuel is expected to hit our bowsers today” — meaning petrol will reach service stations across the country. If you only know “petrol pump” or “gas pump,” you would miss the meaning entirely. In everyday Australian speech you might hear: “There was a long queue at the bowser” or “She pulled up to the bowser and it was out of order.” Outside Australia and New Zealand, almost no one uses this word. British English says “petrol pump”; American English says “gas pump.” In Australia, “bowser” is simply the normal, everyday word — not informal, not technical, just standard.
