How does Kannada name brothers and sisters?

This Raksha Bandhan clip celebrates the bond between «ಅಣ್ಣ ತಂಗಿ» (“elder brother and younger sister”), as a sister ties the protective rakhi thread. The two words reveal something English can’t: ಅಣ್ಣ (anna) is specifically an elder brother, and ತಂಗಿ (tangi) a younger sister.

Kannada, like its Dravidian relatives, ranks family by age: ಅಣ್ಣ (elder brother) versus ತಮ್ಮ (younger brother), ಅಕ್ಕ (elder sister) versus ತಂಗಿ (younger sister). There’s no plain word for just “brother”, you have to say which. Raksha Bandhan itself honours that bond, the brother as protector. Four words where English makes do with two.
