Why is Moroccan Arabic so full of French loanwords?

طوموبيل (toumoubil) is the Moroccan Darija word for “car,” lifted directly from French automobile. It’s one of countless French nouns that fold into Moroccan Arabic so seamlessly that most speakers don’t think of them as French. Moroccan road life is full of these loanwords: birmi for driver’s license (from permis), trotwar for sidewalk, velour for the velvet seat material.

This clip stacks several in 30 seconds. A driver complains about speed bumps (دودان, a native Darija word), explains he doesn’t have a birmi, and refers to the toumoubil. Native Darija nouns sit alongside French ones, and standard Arabic teaching materials don’t prepare you for the mix.
