What does “tanda” mean in Mexican Spanish?

A tanda is Mexico’s homegrown answer to a savings account: a handful of people agree to put in the same amount on a fixed schedule, and each round one member takes home the entire pool. No bank, no interest, just trust — your turn early is basically a loan, your turn late is forced saving. It is so woven into daily life that a sizable share of Mexicans have been in one. Elsewhere it is a cundina, a vaquita, or a ROSCA.

In the clip Magda pitches it as a tiny startup — “armar un grupo de máximo cinco inversores… así el dinerito corre rápido” — joking that the cash sits in un florero (a flower vase) and that this will make Wall Street tremble. The humor lands because the tanda really is finance stripped to its social bones: the only collateral is knowing everyone in the circle.
