What does “muur” mean in Dutch?

Muur (wall) is one of the first Dutch words learners pick up. What’s easy to miss: it comes from the Latin murus (wall), and that same root gives English the word mural. A wall painting is a “mural” because it goes on a murus. So every time you hear muur in Dutch, there’s an English art word hiding just behind it, both tracing the same ancestor.

In her Amsterdam flat, Novelle holds up six paint testers and names each wall she wants to colour: “Voor de muur. En deze muur. En die muur.” The plural is muren. Latin murus spread widely across European languages: French mur, Spanish muro, Italian muro — and English borrowed the adjective form muralis (of the wall) to give mural. Dutch inherited the noun directly from Latin via Old Dutch mūr. In cycling, de muur is also the name for some of the steepest cobbled climbs on the Flemish classics route — notably the Muur van Geraardsbergen — so the word carries weight well beyond interior decorating. Common uses: een muur schilderen (to paint a wall), tegen de muur (against the wall), een blinde muur (a blank wall with no windows).
